| To Sidney Spit Under Cover of Darkness | Saturday, July 21, 2018 - 19:48 | Cadboro Bay | Sidney Spit | 0.00 | 5.39kts | 14.07NM | Cruising |
Calm, clear, flood tide We finally planned to take the kids to Sidney Spit for the day. The plan was for me to take T2 to the spit today, spend the night and then pick up Tania and the kids the next morning. We vacillated between whether to go today or tomorrow. Finally we decided to go today but by then our nanny, Marie and her partner Ivan (whom Tania had invited to help her with the kids) had made other plans and weren't available until 11:00. So, again, do we go today or tomorrow. Well, by 18:30 we decided I should go today so they dropped me off at Cadboro Bay and away I went. The sun slipped below the horizon as I passed Zero Rock and by the time I arrived at the Spit I had a hard time seeing the boats without mast-head lights at anchor, ley alone all the fucking crab traps. I only recall navigating by night once before. Dad and I did the same trip on Sea Jay (our Thunderbird). That was certainly long before tablets with chart plotter software and built in GPS. Actually, that was before GPS. Man am I dating myself. I don't think Dad even had Loran on the T-bird. So it was all dead reckoning in the dark with paper charts. I was in awe of my father and his navigational prowess. Today a shaved ape could navigate at night. Actually the ape wouldn't even have to be shaved. Sunset on Haro Strait.
Zero Rock at night-fall.
Nice.
Entering Sidney Channel.
Depth sounder, house panel and chart plotter. Piece of cake.

| A quick trip back to Cadboro Bay | Thursday, July 12, 2018 - 12:08 | Sidney Spit | Cadboro Bay | 0.00 | 5.34kts | 14.72NM | Cruising |
On the final day of this trip, I awoke to a negative tide. The ocean was so low, I had to row through the eel grass to get to shore. Once ashore there was a huge expanse of beach to explore both on the West and East side of the spit. I walked the spit after breakfast and then hauled the anchor and headed for home. The tide was ebbing and I made very good time.
The spit is high and dry this morning.
Exposed eel grass with T2 in the background.
Tide pool on East side of Sidney Spit.
I could almost walk across the eel grass to get to shore. Almost.

| To Burgoyne Bay and Sidney Spit | Wednesday, July 11, 2018 - 11:07 | Maple Bay | Sidney Spit | 3.00 | 3.95kts | 24.63NM | Cruising |
After fueling up at the Maple Bay marina gas dock, I motored out into a fresh Southerly breeze. I was determined to have a look at Burgoyne Bay. A few years back when we visited Saltspring as a family, we drove to the top of Mount Maxwell and saw what looked like a great beach in a large bay. I made a mental note to visit Burgoyne Bay at some point in the future. That day was today. It turns out, the bay is very deep so you have to get quite close to the beach to anchor. On this day the South wind was creating whitecaps so I didn't bother dropping the anchor. I just shut off the motor for a while and had lunch. Just around the corner from Burgoyne Bay, between Vancouver Island and Saltspring Island, lies Sansum Narrows. The tide runs over 3 Knots here and today the strong flood tide conspired with the South wind to create some magnificent tidal rips in the narrows. I had decided to motor through against the flood tide through the narrows before raising the sails. I'm glad I did because right in the middle of the frey, where the water runs white there were a handful of small power boats FISHING! Gong show. Clearing the narrows and the long line of power boats coming and going, I raised main and jib and had a lovely sail past Cowichan Bay, around the Southwest end of Saltspring Island. When the wind finally died, 3 hours later I dropped sail and motored to the Spit. I arrived at the Spit at extreme high tide. It seemed most of the spit was underwater. I remember when I first starting visiting Sidney Spit, as a youngster, none of the spit was completely covered by water at high tide. Age, like erosion takes a toll on us all. I anchored at the far North end of the Spit, in some deep water close to shore. After securing T2, I went to shore for a short walk-about. I walked to the end of the spit and took a photo from the top of the navigation light. Returning to the boat, I enjoyed a delicious rib steak for dinner.
I bought a T-shirt here at the Maple Bay Marina.
I sat at that table, right there.
Maple Bay Marina offers a clean, well maintained facility.
The doggy doo-doo area even offers a fire hydrant!
Leaving Burgoyne Bay on Saltspring. Very exposed and very deep. I drifted about while preparing lunch and resuming my journey to Sidney Spit.
The view of Burgoyne Bay from the summit of Mount Maxwell, Saltspring Island.
After bucking the flood tide through Sansum Narrows, I raised the sails and shut off the engine for three hours!
A look of horror when, out of nowhere, appeared.....
...a tanker bore down on T2!
I arrived at the Spit during an extremely high tide. A lot of the spit was under water. This is a picture taken from the navigation lite at the end of the Spit.
Bar-B-Qued rib steak, potatoes and Caesar salad for dinner.
Sunset at Sidney Spit.
High tide at sunset.

| Where I cut loose someone's mooring buoy! | Wednesday, July 11, 2018 - 10:30 | Maple Bay | Maple Bay | 0.00 | 0.97kts | 0.40NM | Cruising, Fuel |
Needing fuel before proceeding to the spit, I hauled up the anchor and found it fowled on someone's mooring buoy. Now, let's be clear, it was an illegal mooring buoy with no name or phone number on it. So....rather than loose my Danforth Anchor, I cut through a 1" piece of Blue Steel three strand rope and I was free. I hope whoever owns the mooring buoy notices it's been cut before tying up to it. Oh well... Once I was clear I on-boarded 35 litres of diesel.

| Get me off this visitor's wharf. | Tuesday, July 10, 2018 - 13:45 | Maple Bay | Maple Bay | 0.00 | 1.13kts | 0.50NM | Cruising |
In short order it became obvious that a night spent tied to the Yacht Club's visitors wharf would be very uncomfortable due to exposure to the wind and waves. So, I left to drop the anchor on the East side of Bird's Eye Cove. Which is where I spent the night. |

| First Trip to Maple Bay | Tuesday, July 10, 2018 - 07:39 | Cadboro Bay | Maple Bay | 0.00 | 5.64kts | 30.43NM | Cruising |
Proposed route. Click for interactive view.
Actual route (click for chart view) Ptly. cldy. Clearing Wind light I left Cadboro Bay nice and early. Peppers Foods at Cadboro Bay Village, opens at 07:00 so it's become my custom to arrive at opening for a block of ice and last minute groceries. This trip I really under-packed in terms of food. Forget the cold cereal and milk. Bring on the greasy meat and eggs! I was hoping to meet up with Beth, Marnie and Mom at Maple Bay, so when I saw how light the wind was, I abandoned the notion of sailing and just motored non-stop to Maple Bay. The trip was without incident and with the flood tide, I made good time. I haven't been to Maple Bay by boat since I was a kid on Sea Jay, our Thunderbird. Like everything else, Maple Bay had grown up and increased in population. The Maple Bay Yacht Club was much, much bigger then back in the day. Features include a concrete dock, a half-dozen boat houses and the ubiquitous updated clubhouse. Upon arriving, I tied up to the visitor's dock and was met by some colorful locals. They wanted to know what club I was from as I wasn't flying a club burgee (just the giant jolly roger!). So I told them I was meeting the owners here and all was well. I wandered up to the clubhouse and lounged on the sun deck, trying to shake the shell shock of standing on top of a diesel engine for 5-and-a-half hours. The clubhouse wasn't open until 14:00 so I returned to T2. About the only thing that hadn't changed was the uncomfortably exposed visitor's dock. Maple Bay is large and as such, can be at the mercy of the North Easterly. In the short time I was there, and with the certainty that I could probably stay for free, using Mom and Dad's reciprocal privileges as members of Royal Vic., I decided to move out and anchor on the East side of the bay. Mom called shortly after I dropped anchor and said they were in Nanaimo and would be another hour at least. I thought the best way to fill the time was to search for some cold beer. Since I follow Carol @MapleBayMarina, I thought I'd try there first. I had tweeted her a question as to whether or not there was a cold beer and wine store at Maple Bay Marina, but I hadn't received a response from her so I led an away team (me) to the marina to gather intel. Front and centre at Maple Bay Marina is a pub. Seemed like the place to enquire about libations so I proceeded to the bar and was told they sell off-sales, but it ain't cheap. I be better off hitting the Scottish Pub at the North end of the bay. "Well, thanks for your candor", I said "and give me a Blue Buck for your trouble." A waitress walked by just then and remarked; "It smells like gas in here." Boarding the dinghy on my way to the marina, I noticed the 10l gas can I keep in the dinghy had leaked in the sun and there was a small amount of gasoline on the floor of the dinghy. I made a note to clean it out later. "Did you just say it smells like gas in here?" I asked the girl. "Yes", she said. So I copped; "Yah, I think that's me. It's my boating cologne." Polite laughter ensued and then I split. Back in the dinghy I pushed the throttle to max (4hp) and lay across the bow for maximum speed to the other end of the bay, and the Lion Rampant Scottish Pub, cold beer and wine store. The pub has its own dock right in the 'town' of Maple Bay and welcomes boaters who patronize the pub to moore there overnight for free! Can you believe it?! Shortly after returning to T2, my phone rang and a woman's voice implored; "Where the hell are you?" At first I thought it was my wife but then Cousin Marnie identified herself. I told her I'd be at the Maple Bay Yacht Club in 2 minutes. I had a nice visit with Beth, Marnie and Mom in the clubhouse over a beer. They departed for Victoria, and I went out to T2 for dinner. I bar-b-qued some ribs for dinner and then went to the Maple Bay Marina for a Caesar salad, prawn skewer and a glass of wine. The day ended with a viewing of the original 'Mutiny on the Bounty'.
The foreshore at Maple Bay Yacht Club. Note canon used to discourage non-affiliated visitors. My Jolly Roger is visible to the left of the Canadian flag.
The club house.
The Lion Rampant Pub. Sinister looking isn't it?
Encouragement to drink AND free moorage?! WTF
Moored in Maple Bay, just off the yacht club with Maple Bay Marina in the background.
At the end of the day; "The Mutiny on The Bounty" in the comfort of T2's theatre.

| Back to Cadboro Bay with a leaky Stuffing Box | Thursday, July 5, 2018 - 10:14 | Oak Bay Marina | Cadboro Bay | 0.00 | 3.99kts | 2.38NM | maintenance |
Sunny S 5 Kts. Turns out Jesse couldn't free the stuffing box. So, after all that, I still have a leaky stuffing box. But I do have a brand new shifter cable, assorted water hoses and the engine looks and runs great. Will have to have Gartside pull the shaft and replace stuffing box when she comes out next Summer. |
||
| To Gartside for Stuffing Box | Monday, July 2, 2018 - 08:04 | Cadboro Bay | Oak Bay | 0.00 | 3.78kts | 2.37NM | maintenance |
Sunny. SE 10-15. I'm finally getting my stuffing box tightened. I've needed it since taking over the boat. Along with that, I need a new shifter cable and am also going to have Jesse replace some hoses and give the engine the once over. I met Barnucka at Oak Bay Marina gas dock. Sneaking her into the Gartside service dock was a challenge with no engine shifter. But we managed to pull it off and that's where she remains as of this writing.
Very tight maneuvering what with low tide and no room at the dock! Oh, and no gear shifter.
And that's a 2' tide. Imagine zero?!
The other boat finally left. $791.93 later and I still don't have a tight stuffing box!

| Back to Cadboro Bay | Wednesday, June 20, 2018 - 15:15 | Tsehum Harbour | Cadboro Bay | 0.00 | Cruising |
S 15 Kts. Sunny. Flood tide. Uneventful trip back to Cadboro bay against flood tide. Chart plotter became disconnected from power and so shut down. Arriving at Mooring buoy, realized transmission shifter had become disconnected so had to shut down and drift to buoy. Lucky this didn't happen earlier in the trip. Will book with Gartside for stuffing box and shifter repair. |

| Return to Tsehum Harbour to Drop off Boys | Wednesday, June 20, 2018 - 13:49 | Royal Cove, Portland Island | Tsehum Harbour | 0.00 | 5.22kts | Cruising |
After a fortifying breakfast expertly prepared by Tom, we embarked on a brisk circumnavigation of Portland Island, on foot. We came face to face with one of the many masked bandits on the island. (Racoons) We were also treated to the site of both Pacific Swift and Pacific Grace at anchor just off-shore.
Just a handful of boats at Royal Cove on Portland Island.

Like a scene from days long gone, Pacific Grace and Pacific Swift at anchor off Portland Island.
Three tenders each from Grace and Swift. We passed about 20 kids on shore. |

| Royal Cove | Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - 12:46 | Bedwell Harbour, Pender Island | Royal Cove, Portland Island | 2.50 | 3.17kts | 9.63NM | Cruising |
Sunny & warm. Southwest 5 - 10 Kts. We raised the anchor and the sails. The wind was a little illusive, but we managed to find some and had a lovely sail to Royal Cove on Portland Island. This was my first time anchoring at Royal. Other than the ferry wash, it was amazing. We went ashore on a tiny beach on the point of the cove. There were only two other sailboats in the cove with us.

These are the only photos I have featuring Trouper II underway by sail.
A little piece of paradise with T2 at anchor in Royal Cove, Portland Island.

| Bedwell Harbour | Monday, June 18, 2018 - 14:58 | Tsehum Harbour | Bedwell Harbour | 0.00 | 4.92kts | 12.36NM | Cruising |
Sunny, calm. After hauling the crab trap to discover a bunch of Red Rock Crabs (no dungeness), we continued on to Bedwell Harbour and revelled late into the night, including a stop at the pub for a couple of rum and cokes! We anchored off the beach where mom and dad did the elephant walk a lifetime ago. It was the first time I returned to Bedwell since visiting with mom and dad on Sea Jay.
Welcome aboard Trouper II Kevin and Tom.
Too bad they couldn't leave their crabs behind!

Sunny. Calm. Leaving the crab trap behind, I motored over to Tsehum Harbour to pick up Kevin and Tom. I topped up the fuel tank with $50 worth of diesel and that was the last I saw of my wallet. Fortunately I had no cash nor credit cards in it at the time.

| To Sidney Spit for Crabs | Monday, June 18, 2018 - 08:20 | cadboro bay | Sidney Spit | 0.00 | 4.15kts | 13.99NM | Cruising |
Sunny, calm, ebb tide. Unlike my last trip to the Spit, there was zero wind so my sail vs. engine hours were skewed in favor of the engine. (Damn!) Even though I was bucking the tide, I still made pretty good time. I had a couple of hours on the Spit while waiting for Tom and Kevin to get ready for pickup at Tsehum Harbour. I dropped the crab trap with the intention of picking it up on the way to Bedwell Harbour.
Leaving Zero Rock behind on my way to Sidney Spit.

| Father's Day with Dad | Saturday, June 16, 2018 - 09:42 | Cadboro Bay | Cadboro Bay | 2.00 |
Southeast 5 -10 Kts Ebb turning to Flood tide. Clear and sunny. A perfect day for a father's day sail! Mom walked Dad down to the boat at the Yacht Club's visitor's wharf. Mom brought lunch for dad and I, and a six pack of Corona's for father's day. The wind started off very light but gradually built the farther out we got. My Android chart plotter bit it in Plumper passage, so we headed back toward the club and more familiar waters. Dad started to get cold so after I dressed him in my sweatshirt and jacked we buzzed Willow's Beach and headed back to the club for a pint in the chart room with mom. A lovely father's day. Dad really enjoyed himself. Many boating adventures coming up. Tomorrow the family is heading out to Trouper II for hamburgers and corn on the cob! Then the next day I'm off to Sidney to pick up Tom and Kevin for a couple nights at Bedwell Harbour on Pender Island for two nights! Nirvana!!!
Dad at the helm. He's still got it!

Partly cloudy SW 5 Kts. Flood. Left work a little early and had a lovely 2 hour adventure in the bay. As I was coming in, the Wednesday night racing boats were heading out. It was nice to be out there with other boats. This was the first time I used the Genoa in a long, long, time. I had forgotten how much bigger it is than the jib.

| Day trip to Sidney Spit | Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - 09:14 | cadboro bay | Sidney Spit | 4.25 | 3.75kts | 16.85NM | Cruising |
Sunny. SW 15 - 20 Kts. Flood tide. An absolutely perfect run to the Spit. This is the first time I've sailed all the way to the Spit. Usually the wind dies in Sidney Channel but not today. Today it was nice and steady! I had no trouble navigating the anchorage at Sidney Spit. I've gone aground here before with Andrew. The Navionics upgrade showed the depth of anchorage in some detail so, even thought the depth sounder was indicating 3 ft., I did not touch bottom. It was fairly windy in the anchorage. There were only 4 other boats (all sail but one) at the Spit. I tied up to a mooring buoy, launched the dinghy and went to shore. It was damn cold on the beach. Very exposed. Noted there is no vegetation on the Spit so it would be a great beach for Havana. I left the Spit after a couple of hours, bound for Tsehum Harbour so that I could catch a bus home and be here to offer Tania S.O.S. Help.
Winging the jib South of James Island

Shore party Looks great but it was a little chilly with the South Easterly.

Sunny, North Westerly 10 Kts. Ebb tide Wow! What an amazing day to sail around Discover Island! Witnessed a patrol boat, boarding a recreational fishing boat. Not sure if it was US Customs, Fisheries, or what cause I was too far away. But it was quite something. I was hoping they'd board me next but they didn't.
