Sidney Spit | Saturday, June 19, 2021 - 18:23 | Princess Bay, Portland Island | Sidney Spit | 0.00 | 3.40kts | 7.50NM | Cruising |
As Gina and I were returning to Princess Bay from Shell Beach on Portland Island, I saw Inkla leaving. I dropped G off on T2 and lit out after B Man. Turns out he'd been at Princess Bay since late morning. I hadn't even noticed him when we got back from our hike and had lunch. I caught up to him in Skully damn near Coal Island. He was heading for the Spit, so I told him I'd meet him there later for the night. I dropped Gina off at Van Isle Marina and then hooked up with Barnucka at the Spit.

Princess Bay, Portland Island | Saturday, June 19, 2021 - 05:49 | Glenthorne Passage, Prevost Island | Princess Bay, Portland Island | 0.00 | 4.10kts | 15.70NM | Cruising |
Wanting to take advantage of the ebb tide, I left Glenthorne Passage at first light. (Or close enough). I had told Gina that I was aiming for a 10:00 pickup from Van Isle Marina. I updated her on my new arrival time of 08:12. I told her I'd check in at Vector Yachts about my upcoming haul out on July 12th. Alas they were closed but soon enough Gina and I were en route to Princess Bay, Portland Island. I was a little dumbstruck at the number of boats in Princess Bay. I think there were around 20, which is more than I've ever seen. Gina and I enjoyed a walk half-way around the island in the morning. We walked along the East coast, exploring Arbutus Point and Royal Bay, before cutting back across the middle of the island for lunch. After lunch we took Skully to Shell Beach for the afternoon and enjoyed lounging on the beach and looking for shells. We didn't have to look far obviously.

Cruising Sidney Spit | Wednesday, June 16, 2021 - 17:44 | Cadboro Bay | Sidney Spit | 1.50 | 3.90kts | 14.10NM | Cruising |
I sailed off my mooring buoy and set about cruising Sidney Spit. Almost immediately I confirmed what I'd feared. I had almost no helm at all in a light wind. A massive muscle colony had developed a community on my rudder. It was a diverse community featuring a healthy cross section of marine life including, but not limited to, a kelp forrest, a barnacle range and even a couple of sea cucumbers (according to Barnucka). So I ignited the mighty Yanmar and drove out the bay. There was a steady Southwesterly blowing so I sailed while it held, then switched to power. I arrived at the spit by nightfall, running the final hour with lights burning.

Chatham Island | Sunday, May 30, 2021 - 11:37 | Cadboro Bay | Cadboro Bay | 0.00 | 2.00kts | 6.00NM |
Mostly cloudy. Zero wind. Strong Ebb Tide. Gina and I spent the day on T2. We had coffee then set the crab trap and continued on to Chatham Island. I have to get the bottom done. It took us over an hour to get to Chatham thanks to a very strong ebb tide. We enjoyed hot soup, cheese sandwiches and iced tea. After lunch we motored through the cut, past my firewood beach and back to the anchorage via Strongtide.

Cadboro Bay | Tuesday, May 4, 2021 - 10:26 | Princess Bay, Portland Island | Cadboro Bay | 0.00 | 4.70kts | 18.70NM | Cruising |
I left Princess Bay on Portland Island around 10:30 in the morning, headed for Cadboro Bay. It was a beautiful day so I decided to stopy by Sidney Spit to check for Morels before heading home. I didn't find any so I believe the season is over. There were very few boats at the Spit. After my brief shore leave, I pulled up the anchor and returned to Cadboro Bay. The end of another Spring cruise. I have to get the boat out of the water and paint her bottom.

Princess Bay | Monday, May 3, 2021 - 13:36 | Ganges Harbour, Salt Spring Island | Princess Bay, Portland Island | 0.00 | 4.10kts | 12.00NM | Cruising |
This morning, as predicted the weather has turned for a day on the rainy side. As I write this by the fire on T2, I’m making plans to return home. I’m very disappointed that I came here specifically to see the kids and haven’t. Due to a ‘medical emergency with Clara’ Tania and the kids are in Victoria. I should phone Luther Court to see about her. As soon as the rain stops I'll head for Princess Bay on Portland Island. No reply from Luther Court. I left Ganges Harbour right around the time Tom was getting off work at 14:00. Filled up with diesel at the Port of Ganges and then lit out for Portland Island. Three sailboats here in Princess Cove including T2. I went to shore and cut some cedar for my fire. I finally fried up the oysters from Glenthorne Passage. They were amazing. Nice and firm, no milk. Lovely. I had a bumpy night due to marine traffic. Had better sleeps in Ganges. It’s only 08:22 and I’ve already had breakfast and washed the dishes. Now I’m waiting for the coffee to kick in before saying goodbye to the immaculate pit-toilet on shore.

Ganges Harbour | Saturday, May 1, 2021 - 13:22 | Glenthorne Passage, Prevost Island | Ganges Harbour, Salt Spring Island | 0.00 | 3.50kts | 4.50NM | Cruising |
Arrived at Ganges Harbour, Salt Spring Island. Tucked right into the little spit just South of the Salt Spring Island Sailing Club. I went into town and had lunch at the Oyster Catcher. Lamb burger and crispy fries. Very good. I hooked up with Tom when he got back from Victoria and we had a few laughs before he had to hit the sack. He’s working mornings all week. Yesterday (Sunday) I enjoyed front row seats on the SISC Sunday race. I hadn’t planned on being there but after returning from my visit with Tom, and just before lights out, I noticed I was dragging badly. The wind had switched from the North and I was headed out past the spit and into the harbour. I calmly started T2’s Super Powerful Yanmar Diesel power plant and, after untangling the anchor from what looked like 3/8” floating prawn line, I moved to the open, just off SISC. As it turns out, I’m just a 100 M from their start line. One asshole condescendingly asked If I knew where their start line was. After disposing of his body, I enjoyed a hot cup a’ Joe and watched the race. There were a dozen impressive yachts lining up. After the race was underway I resumed exploring the harbour and some of the sub-culture that has grown up here over the past few years. Interesting to see certain residents row, paddle or motor between clusters of rafted up boats, sketchy looking floating homes and a few massive barges. As Tom puts it, ‘an eclectic assortment of vessels’. Tom and I enjoyed dinner at the Oyster Catcher last night. Tom had pizza and I had an incredible Crispy Chicken, noodle salad with a side prawn skewer. It was delicious.

Glenthorne Passage, Prevost Island | Friday, April 30, 2021 - 14:39 | Cadboro Bay | Glenthorne Passage, Prevost Island | 4.00 | 4.90kts | 26.10NM | Cruising |
Left Cadboro Bay 14:35 Friday under sail bound for Glenthorne Passage. Main and jib. Reached North, down Haro Strait. Strong wind warning posted. Steady 15 Knt South Westerly brought me to the South shore of Sidney Island. Started engine at 17:07 but continued with main until just North of Portland Island. Arrived around 20:00. I didn’t anchor very far into Glenthorne. The first time I came here with T2, I brought along the lads and we drank at anchor in the crotch of Glenthorne’s Passage. So to speak. This is a very quiet, deep and protected place to anchor. I met some guy (Henceforth referred to as S.G.) the last time I was at Princess Cove who mentioned he used to bring his kids here to swim. I’m still unsure if that was meant to be fun or punishment. The waters are still a little too far South for me. This morning I learned that due to a medical emergency in Victoria, I would not be able to meet with the children today. She suggested perhaps tomorrow. Tom is supposed to be returning to Ganges today from doing laundry at his parents’ yesterday. I think I may hang out here for the rest of the morning until I hear from Mr. T. This is much quieter and zen-like than the busy Ganges Harbour on Saltspring Island. This morning I drove Skully to the Federal Marine Park a couple of coves over, just before Trincomale Channel. It’s a very nice spot. There are no boats there right now. I saw many Red Rock Crabs on my way in. I paddled out on my way out and was the subject of great fascination by the local seal crew. There were 8 of them checking me out. Swimming underwater in the shallows all around me. Very cool. After drooling over the ever increasing number of oysters revealed by the ebb tide, I checked with DFO and found that oysters were open in Glenthorne Passage. I soon had a half dozen shucked and tucked for what would end up being breakfast a few days later. Time to haul anchor and head for Ganges Harbour on Saltspring Island.

Cadboro Bay | Tuesday, April 20, 2021 - 09:45 | Bedwell Harbour, Pender Island | Cadboro Bay | 0.00 | 5.00kts | 19.90NM | Cruising |
I left Bedwell Harbour at the crack of 9:45. I had been trying to get a hold of Tania to arrange to see the kids for the past couple of days to no avail. Finally I texted her that if she wouldn't return my texts or phone calls, I'd have to come to the house. Soon after I got a strange email suggesting that she'd filed a police report with RCMP including a description of my car, license plate and photo of Trouper 2. WTF?! So, I'm heading home with some anxiety about the devolving custodial arrangment when my phone rings. It's the Saanich Police. "Do you own a red Mazda 3?" So I'm like, OMG. They're calling about Tania's police report. They weren't. It turns out, the street where I had parked my car had some heavy construction under way. The cops were just hoping I could move my car so the big trucks would have an easier time negotiating the turn. I told them I was on my way and would move it this afternoon. I carried on my voyage home, minding my own business when suddently, I became aware of a sinister presence in the form of an RCMP patrol boat just off my port quarter. Startled, I heaved to and prepared to be boarded. In all my time cruising the Gulf Islands, I had never been boarded or even approached by any kind of patrol boat. But, it would seem that today, all of that would change courtessy of my X Wife. I was about to be arrested at sea while flying the Jolly Roger. I wasn't. It turns out, I had clipped the American border Northwest of Stuart Island and the RCMP were checking to see what I was up to. I always thought I'd be shot at by a U.S. Homeland Security gunship if I got too close. "You're lucky it was us." said the friendly RCMP officer. Two police encounters immediately following Tania's false claim that she had filed a police report. I know it was false because the day after I got home, I turned myself in to the West Shore RCMP Detachment. They had never heard of me.

Princess Cove, Portland Island | Sunday, April 18, 2021 - 14:23 | Sidney Spit | Princess Cove, Portland Island | 0.00 | 3.70kts | 6.80NM |
After dropping mom off at Port of Sidney, I carried on to Portland Island for the night. It was such a relief to find only a few other boats at anchor. The next morning, I was the only boat in Princess Cove! I hiked across the Island and along the coast in search of Morels. Found zero.

Cora at the Spit | Sunday, April 18, 2021 - 09:15 | Sidney Spit | Sidney Spit | 0.00 | 3.60kts | 4.30NM |
Picked up Mom at Port of Sidney and brought her back to the Spit. It was the first time she'd been at the Spit since Dad was operating T2. She really enjoyed our day at the Spit AND she found the first Morel. We found a total of 10 by end of morning. We enjoyed ham sandwiches and then I took her back to Sidney.

Gina at the Spit | Saturday, April 17, 2021 - 09:12 | Sidney Spit | Sidney Spit | 0.00 | 3.10kts | 8.90NM |
Winds calm, Sky clear I picked up Gina from the Customs Dock at Port Sidney. She suffered a moment of disorientation until she spotted the Jolly Roger moving along the top of the breakwater as T2 entered the Port. We went for a long walk, the length of the Spit before returning for lunch aboard T2. I served sliced bar-b-qued port tenderloin on a salad of Spring greens. After lunch we returned to the beach and lounged in the shade near the campground, overlooking the lagoon. I dropped G. off at POS, and then returned to the Spit for dinner. What a difference a day makes. The spit was flooded with boaters looking to spend the weekend in the sun. At one point I counted 75 boats at anchor. INSANE. I have never seen the Spit that busy.

Sidney Spit | Thursday, April 15, 2021 - 12:46 | Cadboro Bay | Sidney Spit | 0.00 | 4.30kts | 16.70NM | Fuel |
Zero wind, Clear skies, flood tide Left for Sidney Spit along with Barnucka in Inkla, after taking on fuel, ice and water at Oak Bay Marina. Average speed of 4 kts indicates increased fouling on the hull. Way beyond time to get her out of the water and onto the hard for a new coat of bottom paint. The voyage North was routine and i dropped anchor just off the Southern beach. Barnucka rafted up. I fell asleep by the stove and ended up burning my hand. The next morning we went for a hike and I found 2 Morels right where I found them before, by the bench on the East side of the Island. Barnucka departed the Spit in Inkla following our walk. I took Skully to the town of Sidney to fill up my gas can. (Note to self, don't leave the 10l gas tank behind next time. Returning to T2, I set up the hammock and enjoyed hanging out.

Sunny. North 5-10 Kts. Ebb tide. Tara, Kelly and I had a lovely sail as evidenced by the photos below! Having capable crew makes the Skipper's job easy! Thanks to you both for your participation and expert skills. Looks like we didn't quite hit 7 knotts Tara. Not for lack of trying though.

First Sail in a While | Saturday, February 27, 2021 - 13:20 | Cadboro Bay | Cadboro Bay | 2.25 | 3.10kts | 8.80NM |
Southeast 10 - 15 Kts. Flood tide. Partly cloud. Installed new traveler caps. Same position as Dad. Son of a Bitch knew what he was doing. New caps didn't fit on the track itself so I just installed them in the original holes. I didn't over-tighten them. When I first began working on T2, I noticed the gap between the caps and the traveller. I thought if I screwed them down tight, they might squish closer to the track ends. Just the opposite ocurred. Soon I was rigged and ready to roll. I was kicking myself for rigging the jib, rather than the Jenny. Until I got out in the strait. Then I was powered just fine, thanks. Beautiful, steady 15 knott breeze. At one point, as I headed out through Banes Channel, I thought about going on to the Spit for the night. However, the fact that I had left Skully behind and it was fucking cold, changed my mind. Had a great sail though. No crabs. :-(

New Galley | Wednesday, February 17, 2021 - 12:37 | Cadboro Bay | Cadboro Bay | 0.00 | 0.00kts | 0.00NM |
I finally got rid of the original stove. In it's day, (40 yrs. ago) it was state of the art. The oven was seldom used and hasn't worked since I got the boat. The cooktop worked fine, but there was a leak somewhere. If I didn't turn off the propane at the tank, the tank would drain. Unsettling at the best of times but made worse with the presence of a wood stove. So, I think I managed to match the stain with dad's original work. It's Minwax, Gunstock. And now I have a shit ton of storage where before it was just wasted space. |
